Start either with the collection of works he did with cartoonist Robert Crumb, American Splendor Presents Bob & Harv's Comics, or his book-length work about the year he had cancer (co-written with his wife, Joyce Brabner), called Our Cancer Year. A tie: Master of b&w art in the tradition of Caniff, Jije and Pratt, Tardi mixed nostalgia with his own anarchistic ideas to throw a new light on the history of the century and merged comics with literature. But what we see, page after page, is not a graphic novel, and we must stop lauding such efforts before they corrupt the form beyond all recognition.

The 1960s and early 1970s were heady times for comics in America: for the periodical publishers, sales continued at a healthy pace, and the pop art and camp phenomena allowed the form to connect with the broader culture, thanks to the massive sales of Peanuts and the various mass-market paperbacks filled with super heroes.

Unlike the comic books of the United States, many of the first European comic magazines were published for distribution with newspapers, and later developed into independent magazines published weekly and sold on newsstands for the entire week. Chock full of nuggets of trivia, fiction, and other historical details, without footnotes, many of us wouldn�t get the full desired effect of reading The Sandman. How can the Janes convince them that "Art Saves"?, and the Janes did not disappoint.

If you’re searching for a guide to the most acclaimed comics and graphic books of 2012, you could do worse than going to The Comics Reporter and checking out Tom Spurgeon’s list of lists, which he posted back on 26th January: From amazon to Publishers Weekly to The Village Voice, and scads of individual bloggers and critics too, Spurgeon covers the bases. Briggs's Fungus the Bogeyman and The Snowman can be categorised as Children's Literature though they are enjoyed by all age groups. Friday June 3rd 2016 update: Bryan was filmed in his studio yesterday for a BBC documentary on writers and their books associated with places in the North East.
